Tags: Things I ponder

Let’s suppose there a technology that allows us to simulate some real world experiences like going to the beach, watching a sunset, etc. Closest one to that technology right now is VR (virtual reality glasses, Apple Vision), but I’m talking more realistic than that. Something that makes you feel like it’s happening in real life.

Now suppose there’s a potential serial killer who hasn’t yet killed anyone but we know he has all these urges, inner voice, thoughts, whatever that makes him want to kill other people. A thing we usually do is make him go to a psychologist if he hasn’t committed any crime yet, and put him into jail if he has.

But what if we let him kill but in that simulated environment. He won’t know that he’s in simulated reality and not actual reality. Should we allow him to commit crimes in that simulation?

There’s no consequences for the society as a whole except for paying for that technology. Now what if rich people with same fantasies fund those technology, then we won’t even have to pay for it; we as in the government.

Just something I pondered for a while.

Of course we can say that they will be wasting their life, or they should be punished but what just a thing for a thought.
