Max is a conventionally ugly guy and Morris is a conventionally attractive guy. They are acquaintances of each other.
On a few occasions, Max starts seeing a pattern. Whenever he likes a girl, and thinks about approaching her, he notices that she looks attracted to Morris. One time, it even happened that a girl he liked started talking to him, but he quickly found out that she was actually trying to get to Morris through him.
Max is frustrated of this clear pattern he sees. One day, when he’s out Morris to grab a lunch, he spots a cute girl. He signals Morris, and Morris immediately finds her cute as well.
They decide to approach her (with this unspoken rule that whoever the girl does not choose will back off — the bro code or something like that).
They approach her and have a short chat. Max asks the girl if she’d want to get a coffee someday. She says sure, they set up a date (or god knows a meeting of some kind; thinks Max) for tomorrow at 5 PM after they’re all done with their office work. They were both invited to the date (meeting).
Both are ready and both reach the cafe at 5 PM on time, and they’re both happy to see the girl already there with a cup of coffee and with earphones in her ear.
They go up to her and greet her, she asks them to please sit down. They do.
They start chatting up. It’s was like a date but it’d three people. But it soon became evident that she was just (naturally) drawn towards Morris. She touches Morris’ arm while laughing, and Max’s heart stings for a short moment. Why did it sting? It’s not like I’m in love with her, thinks Max. Fuck her, fuck this. She’s probably an asshole, but how could he blame her for being attracted to Morris, I mean look at him. Fuck, I’m spiraling, thinks Max.
They bid farewell to the girl as they get this hint from her which is again another skill that one builds up which allows one to instantly recognize when one no longer desired around the person.
The two guys — no, men — go to smoke. Morris sees that Max is sad about something. But what is he sad about? Lord knows what he’s sad about, thinks Morris. Max then shares about the “date” and what went through his mind. It was obvious that the girl liked Morris because he is more attractive than Max, but Morris does not know that, he just knows that girls tend to like him, it’s always been that way. So Morris really does not have to say anything to Max. He listens to Max’s small tantrum that he’s throwing in the middle of the goddamn smoke.
They decide to go again, but Max isn’t gonna make a fool of himself again, is he? And how could she invite them both again when it’s clearly visible that she likes Morris. She’s probably trying to tease Max, but why? Lord knows why.
So, Morris reaches the cafe, and greets her. Now, he can finally talk with her alone, without Max and his stupid negative vibes. She’s a beautiful girl. She’s got a dark black hair, clear skin, looks so well groomed and also well dressed. And, damn look at her eyes. What’s up with her eyes? The eyeballs — they aren’t moving. Morris freaks out, but he can’t show that he’s freaked out, not in front of this beautiful girl, and certainly not when he’s finally got the chance to sweep her away from her feet with all his magical words.
He does not say anything, but his eyes are moving (unlike hers) and are searching for at least another piece of useful information. Her bracelets, her rings, the handbag, the fingernails (they’re red). Now what else, her small necklace… wait, her handbag, it’s unusually big or groß (as Germans would say). What’s that thing poking out of her bag. It seems like a small wand. It’s a fucking walking stick.
Is the girl FUCKING blind?

Basically, it was not the problem that Max was unattractive. It was never a problem for the girl cause she was blind. She was attracted to Morris’ personality. She was attracted to how Morris talked with her, whereas Max was always in his head trying to think of the perfect next line.
Now, you can say that Morris is confident because he always had this constant feedback that he’s good looking and that built up his confident which made it look like he’s more attractive and he got more compliments and the loop continued.
You can also probably say that same thing happened with Max but for him, it was a negative loop. He did not get more attention and was called ugly to his face a couple of times, he got down and started obsessing on physical appearance, that equated to him looking more desperate, which made him more unattractive, which made him feel like more people hated his looks, and the cycle continued.
Even if it is true that Morris had an unfair advantage, when is Max going say fuck it and accept it that there are certain things he cannot completely change (like his face) and there are certain things that he can change (like his personality, confidence) and start working on things on his control?
